Police in Jiwaka are calling on business houses to help them keep the reins on the liquor ban that is being imposed in the province and set to run through to the New Year.
Jiwaka police boss Joseph Tondop tells PNG Loop that business houses will be asked to officially declare all their goods that are being transported into the province as well as the current goods that they have in stock.
Tondop says he has instructed his men to carry out major road blocks to inspect all vehicles coming into the province as well as make raids into popular drinking areas to ensure that the ban is being followed.
He says that the ban, which will be for an indefinite period, will look to address the law and order issues that have stemmed from social impacts of the abuse of alcohol in the province.
Meantime, PPC Tondop says that so far, seven days into the liquor ban that has been imposed, has seen a real difference in how the community is conducting itself during this Christmas festive period.
He says that so far fewer than 10 arrests have been made for drunken driving while 15 arrests were made for drinking in public places and 22 for drinking in moving vehicles.
This according to Tondop is a good indication that most people are not abusing the ban as this week alone has seen the numbers drop in terms of arrests being made.
So far the commander says that many of the business houses have expressed their support of the ban while residents are grateful for this step that the provincial government is undertaking to try to deal with this issue.
He says that before the start of the festive period his officers had been carrying out a big awareness on the establishment of this ban and which areas the ban hopes to deal with in terms of law and order issues.
