WELCOME TO TARI "PNG HIGHLAND PARADISE"

Tari is unique in that it represents the overlap of a wider range of altitudinal habitats, more so than perhaps any other region in PNG's highlands. This explains the amazing biodiversity of the region and especially when it comes to the amazing Birds of Paradise - Tari boasts thirteen species of these wonderful birds. However, the fascinating variety of birds is not the full story, and you are likely to be impresses with the flora of the place including its orchids, ferns and other wonderful plants.

When I arrived in Tari, what struck me first and foremost about the people was how friendly, polite, humble and timid they were - totally contrary to the scary image portrayed by some media of the fierce warrior type. Especially if you're a foreigner, you'll find that most highlanders will be very friendly towards you and will be fascinated to learn about your country and culture. They'll be happy to befriend you in no time at all.

The Huli wigmen culture is famous and justifiably, and I would strongly recommend that you experience some of the local cultural & social activities to get a taste of it. Try to go to a Singsing but make sure to avoid the fake choreogrpahed ones !. Talk to Veronika Payawi and she'll advise you of the genuine events. There is ample information on the Internet about the Huli Wigmen and their culture, so I would recommend doing some research about the men houses and other Huli traditions before you travel.

Tari is a small town situated in Southern Highland Province of Papua New Guinea, and is the home of the famous and wonderful Huli Wigmen.

The Tari basin lies amidst some of the most spectacular mountain highlands in PNG. The landscape is stunningly beautiful while the cool & pleasant climate year round makes for a very welcome break from the heat of the lowlands. The region receives much rain and this is reflected in the lush green scenery and the amazing diversity of flora and fauna.
