PNG Politicians on facebook

Abigail Pundari shock's Facebook with a powerful thought for Discussion , i found this post when i was surfing the net , i found it rather interesting and joined in .
Abigail John

"Hi Guys. Just a thought for discussion.
What is the point of PNG Politicians on facebook?
I mean yes, it is a way to communicate with them but this communication will only be between the ones on facebook and the politicians. What about the rest of Papua New Guinea who are NOT on facebook and can't get on facebook or even know how to use it? What about them? Who will listen to them when politicians...
are talking with facebookers? Moreso, facebook is a social network site. Not for political agendas. Well thoughts and ideas can be shared but with the politicians themselves on facebook? We are all talking about how facebook is a waste of time for us, wouldn't that apply to politicians as well? Them wasting peoples time on facebook?
When they should be out their talking to their people in the rural areas?
There are other ways to commununicate with the leaders. Emails, letters, meetings, phone calls... Why a social network where everything is blown out of proportion? Leaders of other developed countries are not on facebook, even when all its citizens can get on facebook to communicate directly with them. And PNG, a still developing nation have leaders who have accounts on fb, and actually GET on fb. Anyways its up for discussion. :)"

Leanne Clarke Stubbs ‎Gary Juffa my old....classmate.......from way back when, loves FB. It is an outlet for him to vent and talk with people who can articulate. Not everyone can be on FB, but it doesn't mean you should not use different methods of getting your message across...it's all about communication and getting your message across affectively....I think...but then again I am not a politician...

Leanne Clarke Stubbs FB is for everything....social networking is a new tool to open up and relay ideas, politics, business, media and so on....it is soooo much more than a bunch of kids pissing each other off...

Ivano Ivano Jnr Interesting point Abigail. I reckon you should post that in Sharp Talk to be discussed. It'll be a great discussion.

Abigail John ‎@Leanne your right, I mean they are people too... They have families to communicate with and that's just fine. Its just that using facebook for political agendas... The newspaper would be a better medium for communication... I just think its unfair for grass roots who vote for them and are not on fb to read their speech or whatever ideas they put on facebook. And also what they say can be held against them u know. Then again its just my opinion, won't make a difference, just to generate thoughts from fb friends.. :)

Leanne Clarke Stubbs That's why you have more than one FB account...one for John and one for John family man. He doesn't have to spend a lot of time on it but someone needs to monitor it. Post important upcoming events, stances on what he/she believes etc. A ton of US politicians have FB accounts and I am sure even in developing countries. He can write in pigin too....It's free....use the technology around you. What does a lapun like me know anyway.... ;-)

Arleena Frame Obama campaign used facebook and other social media/networking sites mad effectively, and he received a huge amount of positive feedback saying that he was "revolutionizing" campaigning. Our politicians are trying to copy him I think (as many politicians have been trying to do, Australians included if I'm remembering correctly), but are overlooking the fact that that was AMERICA and this is PNG. The majority of the votes aren't on the internet lol

Abigail John ‎@Leanne, that true to write in pidgin but I'm thinking of my people in Enga. Internet network cannot reach them all. And I believe that's the same for every other rural district in PNG.. Anyway if its a way forward, then so be it... I just don't think its worthwhile...

Leanne Clarke Stubbs Abby, even if you think the older generation might not be able to work it....think of kids like Newman and Tian that connect with their cell phones...a new more educated younger generation. Good discussion by the way! :-) And I did call my uncle Amble in Sopas village while he was on his cell phone...and uncle Kennedy in POM. :-)

Abigail John ‎@Kofi, I was using that as an example. I reckon there are other pngeans who are not on fb. Villages. Living in rural places who need basic services. And can't get on facebook cos they don't have a pc or phone? Thanks to digicel we have a wider communication network range but like I said... I'm just saying...

Abigail John But they are living in towns. I'm talking about the ones back at home. Villages where house kunais are. These are the people to be considered. :-).

Michael Midiwabu AJ, its growing. Dual accounts may make up for this figure. However if this rate prevails, total FB population may reach 200,000 by end of year. Add the next for the rest of this 5 year term. May reach close to half a million or more.

BrĂ©anainn Kelev ‎"What is the point of PNG Politicians on facebook?" Why not ask a plitician who's on facebook? get his/her firsthand feedback on why they are on facebook, and what political advantages they beleive they have?....I think there would be a better discussion with constructive critisims if we knew their views on the matter.

Zhan Mawa Aili nothing to compare with developed contries...as PNG as a developing nation, it's growing rapidly in technology among other things...mobile phones have just been introduced and now it's every around the country, even into the remote areas..almost 90% of the population are owning and using the mobile phones..Mobile phone companies are now changing their styles and types of mobiles to attract customers and the demand still growing.. In that FB is access most by everyone through mobile phones and I see not long everyone and anyone will access to the FB. We must appreciate and thank God that we (this generation) are fortunate to see these changes which our fore fathers n mothers have had a very difficult life without even seen and communicatiing with people from other part...so to me, those leaders on FB is good. Leaders are the public figures and their motives, plans and whatsoever in themselves should be known by the public...and they also need the see from the public view on any decisions they want to make...Thumps up to those leaders who are on facebook!!!

Jim Thompson its a good in a way as the educated majority of papua new guineans are on fb, so its easier for them to point out their personal veiws about the country to these politicians on fb.. but most of these politicians on fb dnt bother replying to issues being raised for them to take note of.
u should see most of their pages where pictures of young desperate girls being uploaded nd tagged to some of these politicians, the reason behind this well i'm not sure..

Abigail John I'm speaking for the villagers. Ones back at home. Rural districts. Not town nor city populations in PNG.
@Zhane, that's a good point. Though I'm still against Politicians on fb. :/ anyways thanks for all your comments! :D and believe you me... Most of these pngeans on fb are abusing it by posting porn. Hence don't know how to use fb. How can they express their concerns for PNG in development if this is the way they use fb?
@Jim, exactly... Poloticians don't need that. Being on fb will cause these stirs amongst woman looking to 'get some' from MPs. MPs are supposed to set examples right? And what good example is that when scandales rise?
Anyways, twas my opinion and I stand my it. Good evening and happy sabbath. :))

They have families to communicate with and that's just fine. Its just that using facebook for political agendas... The newspaper would be a better medium for communication... I just think its unfair for grass roots who vote for them and are not on fb to read their speech or whatever ideas they put on facebook. And also what they say can be held against them u know.
