Sir Michael maintains lead

GRAND Chief Sir Michael Somare maintained his lead Thurday night, this time with a huge 17,874 vote ahead of his political rivals as of nine o’clock last night in the East Sepik Provincial Seat.
Sir Michael led with 59,503 votes when the paper went to press ahead of political rival and Pangu Pati man Allan Bird on 41,629 votes when counting continued in some electorates last night.
Running third was PNG Party man Greg Maisen with 8907 votes followed by People’s Freedom Pati strong hold Moses Murray on 6225 votes. People’s National Congress candidate Tony James Walwal was trailing fifth with 5617 votes and independent candidate Camillus Narokobi with 2745 votes.
Sir Michael singlehandedly collected 12,586 votes in the Wewak Open seat when it was suspended last night while Sir Allan Bird had polled 31,620 votes.
In the Ambunti seat, Sir Michael polled 10,225 votes while Bird had 10,137 votes. In Wosera Gawi Grand Chief collected 7642 votes while Allan Bird had a whopping 11,813 votes.
In Angoram, at count 17, Sir Michael collected 9515 votes ahead of Allan Bird with 1744 votes – counting for that seat continued last night when the paper went to press.
Yangoru Sausia seats gave Sir Michael 11,1506 votes while Allan Bird collected 1783 votes last night.
Ballot boxes are still being counted.
In Maprik, the regional seat counts have ended and Sir Michael polled 8385 votes while Allan Bird collected 12,990 votes.
Counting continues this morning.
