Tants: No political sway

By JOHNNY POIYA

THE executives of Wamp Nga Holdings have reassured the people of Western Highlands that they are an expanding corporate entity and not influenced by political interference.
Group general manager for corporate services, Andrew Tants, said Wamp Nga Holdings was owned by Nebilyer, Hagen Central and Anglimp LLGs of WHP but its business arms or subsidiaries are all managed by professionals.
Wamp Nga’s subsidiaries include Western Star Trucks, Hotel Kimininga, two service stations in Mt Hagen and Goroka, three computer shops in Goroka, Mt Hagen and Wabag and Wamp Nga Liquor Distributors and property division, and they were all run by professionals who would never be involved in politics.
Mr Tants made the remarks with the local level governments’ election around the corner.
“There is a lot of politics with many people using the Wamp Nga Holding’s but the people should know that the business arms are operated by professional people. Business is business and it has nothing to do with politics,” Mr Tants said.
“We intend to let the people know that the time of political interference with Wamp Nga Holdings is over. We’re growing bigger and have bigger plans regardless of political connections and interferences.”
He said the management team underwent a restructure recently and the new team under CEO Jim Maxwell wanted to capitalise on the positive side of business and not to allow politics to creep into the already expanding businesses and cause disruptions.
“We want to tell politicians to leave business alone and not to use Wamps as a political tool to gain mileage. The people of this province must see it as a business,” Mr Tants said.
“If a deputy governor is elected from one of three shareholder LLGs, he automatically becomes the chairman of Wamp Nga Holdings Ltd – in this case, its Wai Rapa from Mt Hagen LLG,” he said.
Mr Tants said the company was quiet for some time and financially relied a lot on the backing of banks but now was on its feet and was expanding, with plans to go into commercial motoring in the near future.
“The firm is being run by people who see and do big things and such things as petty politics would not disturb our operations,” he said.
