Warning to drunk police

By JOHNNY POIYA

Drunk police officers causing nuisance in barracks in Western Highlands province would have their accommodation privileges forfeited and disciplined, including termination.
Provincial Police Commander Martin Lakari issued the warning to his men and women last week, after labelling the Ela and Kimininga Police Barracks inside Mt Hagen city as the nosiest with a lot of nuisance caused by drunk officers, especially on the weekends.
Acting Chief Superintendent Lakari also warned officers not to accommodate adults and other relatives in the barracks as these people contributed to a lot of problems.
“Any particular officer or group of police officers caught causing nuisance in the barracks will automatically have their accommodation privileges forfeited, would be seriously charged and recommended for dismissal,” Chief Lakari said.

“The barracks is like our village and we are a community where we’re supposed to have respect for one another. It is a place where we should raise our children with discipline.”
Mr Lakari also reintroduced the fatigue and sports program for all his officers every Wednesday in order to maintain fitness, organisation and discipline as well as keeping their working and living environment clean and healthy.

The program kicked off on Wednesday with a parade for all police personnel at the Mt Hagen Police Station. The one-hour work parade included cleaning the police cells and various offices and work stations.
They later moved to Kimininga Barracks oval and took part in sporting activities.
“This will become a normal program for every officer on Wednesdays. This will be the telling time where we’ll find out if all our officers are fit to enforce law and order or not and to improve on the physical front,” Mr Lakari said.
