A RECENT work stoppage affecting PNG LNG project
activities in Hela province was not as widespread as reported,
according to ExxonMobil’s Papua New Guinea subsidiary.
The Post-Courier
reported this week that Angore landowners had halted access road
construction, onshore pipeline development, “drilling oil wells” and
other works.
However, a spokesman from project operator Esso Highlands Limited only revealed that the gas pipeline work was impacted.
“EHL confirms that a small group of people has stopped a portion of work on the PNG LNG Project onshore pipeline in the Awatangi area of the Hela Province,” the spokesman said.
“We believe the action is illegal and understand the issue is related to the distribution of business development grants. Work has been temporarily suspended in the affected area but is continuing throughout the rest of the project area.
“EHL has requested that the group work with the government to resolve this matter and allow project activities to continue.”
A month ago about 74% of the 292km onshore pipeline of the PNG LNG project was welded.
At the time, the spokesman said more than 215km of the onshore main line and spurline pipe was welded and 176km of pipeline has been hydrotested.
