A community leader in North Waghi, Jiwaka Province is calling on the local MP and Defence Minister Dr Fabian Pok to speed up his longtime campaign promise of delivering an electricity project in the electorate.
The leader, Spear Kolmane, says it is taking almost three years for the MP to deliver his election promises.
He says several launchings and groundbreaking ceremonies have been held last year and the previous year for the electricity and other projects as well but nothing has been implemented to date.
“This is a concern for the people of North Waghi because they believed in Pok’s style of leadership when he first won the North Waghi seat back in 1997. He has implemented many projects then and he was acclaimed as a man who could deliver,” the leader said.
Pok lost his seat to Michael Maskal in the 2002 elections after serving one term in Parliament. “He was mandated again in the last election but things are not working out the way people have anticipated,” Kolmane said.
He says he doesn’t understand why the Minister is not delivering after narrowly defeating the incumbent MP Benjamin Mul in the last national elections.
“The only impact project he has delivered since winning the seat in 2012 is the rural housing scheme where he delivered a total of 24 portable sawmills for the more than 60 Local Level Government council wards in the electorate.
“With sawmills people are expected to look for their own trees to produce timber to build permanent houses for themselves. Every married couple that completed cutting timber will also receive ten roofing irons to support them in building their houses. To date the roofing irons have yet to be delivered,” he said.
“He needs to wake up and get his election promises work for his people before more people lose trust in him,” he said.
