City authority lacks funding

By PEARSON KOLO

MT HAGEN has seen mountains of rubbish piling up in all corners of the city and the city authority is tirelessly using its limited resources to clean it up.
The rubbish — mainly from the main market — has been polluting the area with a bad odour as it decomposes.
The city authority started a major clean-up last week in the market and is moving through the streets this week.
A veteran member of Mt Hagen city authority Paul Koiya said currently there is no proper management and the authority has no decent source of funding for this clean-up operation.
“The city authority only has machines and dump trucks which it are using,” he said.
“We have other programs such as a city beautification project but these plans are on hold as the Hagen urban and rural LLGs where most of the funding for the city authority comes from are not properly operating because of the hiccup in the LLG elections.”
“So far the huge piles of rubbish seen in the main market have been removed but people including market vendors, businesses and individuals must dispose their rubbish properly.”
The city authority responsible for the beautification of the third largest city in the country needs new equipment and machines like dump trucks and loaders to effectively do its job.
They have over the years been using old trucks and loaders and other rundown assets to clean the city.
The city’s on going expansionon is making the work of the authority more tiring and difficult.
The Mt Hagen city authority is appealing to the provincial government, the national government and business houses in Mt Hagen to assist it keep the city clean.
