Rheeney returns as Editor

The Post-Courier has announced the appointment of journalist and blogger, Alexander Rheeney, as its new Editor.

Mr Rheeney, 38, previously worked for the newspaper from 2001 to 2008 as reporter and senior reporter before joining the British High Commission in April 2008 as its political and communications adviser.

In 2011 he was awarded an Australian Leadership Award (ALA) and an Allision Sudradjat Award (ASA) by the Australian Government to pursue postgraduate studies in Australia.
He graduated with a Masters Degree in Cross-cultural Communication from the University of Sydney in April this year and undertook a six-month internship at the Lowy Institute for International Policy.

Returning home at the end of July, he worked out of Kokopo, East New Britain Province, as a communications consultant for the World Bank before taking up his new appointment with the daily newspaper.
Kevin Smith, managing director of the South Pacific Post (SPP) and publisher of the Post-Courier, welcomed Mr Rheeney and said he was bringing more than 10 years of experience working for the media and international organisations to the newspaper. “Mr Rheeney returns to the Post-Courier at an important juncture in the newspaper’s history and we look forward to the leadership and strategic direction he will provide, as we strive to provide high quality news content to our readership,” he added.
Appointments to key positions within the newsroom including business editor and chief of staff are also expected to be announced within the next few weeks.
Mr Rheeney, the owner of the popular website and blog PNG Perspective, takes over from Blaise Nangoi who is now the SPP general manager.
