Disciplinary Forces on Recruitment and Awareness Drive

By Lieutenant BARNABAS
MALKEN of PNGDF Media Unit Two disciplinary forces have started their recruitment campaign targeting high schools and tertiary institutions around the country for candidates for their respective forces. And as part of this campaign, Grade 12 students of Gerehu Secondary School in Port Moresby were given an insight into the type of training and jobs available in the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) by officers of the two forces last Wednesday.
The recruitment drive and awareness campaigns were conducted as part of the students’ Guidance sessions, with over a hundred eager and attentive students gathering at the school hall to hear the presentation made by the recruiting teams.
The RPNGC team was first to present to the students and stressed that their primary objective was to provide the students with as much information as possible regarding training and job opportunities within the force, and to ensure those who wished to apply for the force’s next recruitment intake did so as fully informed candidates. They encouraged both male and female students to apply.
The Papua New Guinea Defence Force Recruiting Team concluded the session by carefully outlining the different categories of recruitment and the roles available in the force.
Major Walia Tomola said during his PowerPoint presentation that there were three categories for which candidates can apply. The first being the general enlistee recruitment targeting grade twelves, the force’s officer cadet program and finally, that of direct entry officers.
He said grade twelve graduates who decide to join the PNGDF have the opportunity to receive further training depending on the type of subjects they had taken and as such students were advised to carefully plan which subjects to take should they wish to join the PNGDF after graduating. An example given was that those who wish to join the Naval Element should take Mathematics A and Physics as part of their chosen school subjects as there were further courses available at the PNG Maritime College and overseas as well.
He told the students that entry into the PNGDF Officer Cadet Program was restricted to students with third year university education and above. Direct Entry Officers is for people who are below the age of 35 years old and have experience in other fields as well. Officers are recruited under this category only if there is a specific need within the force.
The presentations ended well with the viewing of short video clips and slide shows showing activities of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force.
Major Tomola said the PNGDF Recruiting Team will be visiting other provinces as soon as funds are available
