TWO policemen from Mendi were nabbed by fellow policemen for smuggling high quantity of alcohol into the Southern Highlands and Hela provinces last week.
The Kaupena based police Highway Patrol unit 17 (H17) with the help of the local security guards caught the two young policemen at the Kaguel river bridge check-point in Imbonggu district and on the border of Western Highlands and Southern Highlands Provinces.
Jackson Windi, security supervisor at the checkpoint said the two policemen were in a white 10 seater Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle with two other local man from Tari who were en-route from Mt Hagen into Mendi and Tari when they arrived at the check-point at about 12.00 midnight.
Mr Windi said the vehicle was a hired one driven by one of the young policeman and when they approached the check-point, the vehicle evaded the check-point and the young policeman kept on driving despite calls by the security guards and H17 unit for a stop to search the vehicle.
The H17 vehicle then gave chase where they shot the tires of the vehicle to force it to a stop.
Mr Windi said the H17 policemen searched the vehicle and found 37 cartons of Dark Rum 350ml OP drinks.
