DEPUTY Prime Minister Belden Namah has called for an immediate investigation into allegations of abuse and mismanagement at the National Airports Corporation (NAC).
Namah, at a media conference yesterday, said he was behind his PNG Party president Robert Akunai who alleged that there was gross mismanagement at the airports.
“We believe there are inefficiency, abuse, nepotism and gross mismanagement at the National Airports Corporation by the chief executive officer and the board chairman,” he said.
“I am now calling for an immediate investigation. The investigation must target the CEO and the chairman as to why there are complaints of corruption at the highest level.”
Namah said he would be writing to the chairman of the Task Force Sweep to also carry out its own investigations into the airport corporation.
He said the hangars had been allocated to
five expatriate companies without going through the normal processes.
“Has it been brought to the national executive council and the board or has the allocation been made by only one or two people?” he said.
Namah also alleged that nepotism had been used in awarding contracts to friends and relatives to run cafeterias at the airport.
Namah said all the NAC directors were expatriates and questioned whether there were no qualified Papua New Guineans available.
He said the Vanimo airport was filled with pot-holes and in a very poor state. It questioned whether the NAC had the ability to manage airports in the country.
Namah said cabinet would be dealing with the airport corporation’s chief executive officer.
“We cannot allow people to continue mismanaging an important state asset,” he said.
