PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill has urged the people of Southern Highlands to keep pace with other provinces in terms of development.
He was in his home province to look at projects and receive the five-year development plans for the Nipa-Kutubu and Kagua-Erave electorates.
“For development to take place, people must change their attitude and embrace development,” he said.
“We cannot continue to live the same life. Other provinces have changed and are moving. We must catch up with them.”
Kagua-Erave district is known for tribal fights and last year, someone used a grenade to blow up a house resulting in deaths and injuries. More than 30 people died during the fight. “We need to learn to forgive and forget and tribal fighting is the main reason why the district has not developed,” he said.
“The important thing we need to know is that, where there is peace, services flow easily.”
O’Neill said district development plans were like roadmaps, which showed the best way to provide basic services to the people.
Nipa-Kutubu MP Jeffery Komal presented his district’s plan at Nipa station while Kagua-Erave MP James Lagea presented his at Kagua station.
O’Neill gave K10 million to Komal for the completion of the electrification project from Hela to Southern Highlands.
He then gave K5 million each to Mendi General Hospital and Nipa Hospital to improve their facilities. O’Neill presented K500,000 to Nipa Secondary School and nearby schools at Nipa station to improve infrastructure.
For the “least developed” Kagua-Erave district, O’Neill committed K20 million for the sealing of the road from Ialibu to Kagua, and K10 million for the road from Erave to Sembirigi.
