50 pigs, K80,000 settle compo demand

TWO tribes from Southern Highlands eventually resorted to a peace agreement at Onja village in Nipa-Kutubu district last Thursday after K80,000 and 50 pigs were paid as compensation.
A boy from Yaken village in Lower Mendi LLG of Imbonggu district died in an accident involving a vehicle belonging to a person from the Aron tribe from Onja village a week ago and demanded K100,000 and 50 pigs as compensation.
Thousands of people crowded the village while the relatives of the vehicle owner chanted in their dialect words of peace and marched in traditional gear.
However, 23 councillors from the LLG organised their people to come with the contribution, K80,000 and 50 pigs had been gathered to give to the relatives of the deceased.
Local businessman and Poroma community leader David Kelly said the 23 councillors and their people’s quick response to the compensation demand meant peace. Kelly said people in the province should understand the nature of the situation.
