PNG finishes gas pipeline to Wayne Co. power plan
Piedmont Natural Gas has finished
building a 38-mile pipeline to serve a Progress Energy power plant near
Goldsboro, the Charlotte-based company said Friday.
The project, which included new compression units, was announced in 2009 at an estimated cost of $85 million. It will serve a gas-fired combined-cycle plant at Progress’ Lee Energy Complex and replace three coal-fired units, reducing emissions.
Piedmont CEO Thomas Skains called the project a “significant milestone” as the company expands its pipeline network to serve power plants. As natural gas prices fall, utilities are increasingly turning to the cheaper fuel.
