Local MPs focus on road service

By DAVID MURI

ASK any inhabitant of far-flung Jimi what he preferred in terms of service delivery and his first answer will be roads. Yes, better roads.
The outlying district’s roads are nothing but muddy patches because of seasonal rains experienced regularly.
But in a matter of weeks the mud spattered tracks violently embraced by four wheel drives will turn into smooth runways, courtesy of local parliamentarians. Jimi MP Mai Dop and Jiwaka governor Dr William Tongamp will jointly fund the district’s deteriorating road network which has been a living nightmare for so long.
The two leaders made the much anticipated undertaking on Wednesday at Tabibuga District station amid booing and shouting from a vocal crowd of approximately 3000 people.
The two MPs committed K5 million each for total upgrading of the road. Mr Dop said first phase of the work would begin at Banz and end at Tabibuga while the second phase from Karap to Kol.

Mr Dop said he had committed his 2013 district service grants entirely for road infrastructure because of the urgency in revitalising its dilapidating state.
The contract was awarded to Mt Hagen based Giru Constructions.
“Our bad roads have been my aching pain and now I’m relieved that it will be upgraded to accepted standards. All other services will flow if we have better roads,” he said.
Dop has asked his people not to interrupt the progress of the road work by claiming unnecessary compensation as the project was delivered to benefit the entire district.
He said unnecessary disruptions would hinder the smooth progress of the project, adding the contractor must be allowed to complete the work on time according to budgetary appropriation.

He urged the contractor to deliver the project according to accepted standards.
Governor Tongamp also shared similar sentiments saying Jiwaka was a new province and that his priority was on road linkage.
“My priority is to link all the roads in Jiwaka. We will concentrate on the road network in our new province,” Governor Tongamp said.
Managing director of Giru Constructions Freddy Koldop thanked both leaders for their efforts in prioritizing road infrastructure in the province. Mr Koldop said Jiwaka was a baby, adding it needed the expertise of young people like them to shape and mould it.
Koldop said workmen would move in next week to repair the culvert and the slip at Las Wari to make way for machines to move in.
He said all culverts wouldl be replaced and the road regravelled in this major upgrading. He assured the people the project would take between six to eight weeks to complete.
Mr Koldop also asked locals not to seek unnecessary compensation, adding it was a new province and vital services like roads were needed to boost its economy.
