Ipatas: There’s only one PM

By DAVID MURI
ENGA Governor Peter Ipatas said every Member of Parliament wants to become prime minister but they do not realise that there is only one position.
Mr Ipatas said the position is constitutionally and demo-cratically occupied by Peter O’Neill through the people’s mandate of the 2012 general elections. He was referring to speculation of a 2014 budget boycott and the eventual change of government being perpetrated by certain factions.
By saying this, the Enga Governor has asked the Opposi-tion and some members of the government not to fool PNG about changing the current O’Neill-Dion Government with promises of improved services and eradication of rampant corruption.
Mr Ipatas believed that no one is perfect and asked those spreading rumours to declare publicly if they had not committed a single sin and siphoned-off public funds.
“Don’t talk about corruption because when you line us up none of us is clean. No man is holy,” Mr Ipatas said in a press conference at Bluff Inn outside Port Moresby on Sunday.
The veteran parliamentarian described Mr O’Neill as a working prime minister who is delivering to the masses in a short period of time. Ipatas went ahead to rank this term as one of his best and rewarding terms in parliament.
Mr Ipatas said MPs were receiving lump sums in excess of K10 million and they should return to develop their electorates rather than dreaming of becoming prime minister which would not materialise.
Mr Ipatas also warned new MPs not to take such funding for granted as life was not like that in previous governments.
He said in previous governments there was no discretionary funding of such magnitude. The People’s Party leader said if MPs could not adequately spend the K10 million to benefit their people then they should not cry for more.
“It’s the only government since Independence to deliver K5 million in PSIP and K10 million is DSIP,” he said.
Mr Ipatas challenged his colleagues and village councillors to utilise the direct funding to benefit their people.
He said development in the country had been stagnant in the last and previous governments, adding PNG should be proud that it is currently driven by a visionary prime minister.
