O’Neill not taking Criticisms over Ok Tedi Issue

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has brushed aside comments and criticisms that the recent constitutional amendments give him too much power.

He said the amendments approved by parliament ensured stability and good government.
In a media statement yesterday, the prime minister praised the overwhelming support of members of parliament for the two constitutional changes.

Contrary to that, the Chairman of PNG Sustainable Development Program Sir Mekere Morauta also released a statement yesterday, attacking the prime minister.

He said the bill passed by parliament allowing state to own 100 per cent shares of Ok Tedi Mining Limited was another example of having too much power.

While the only option now is for PNGSDP to argue this in court, he still argues that there was not much consultation done before the laws and amendments were passed.

Sir Mekere further argued that the changes are not good for investors both international and domestic.
