WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS STATEMENT COMING FROM IEA REGARDING OBE?

Govt’s equation all wrong

INTERNATIONAL Education Agency (IEA) boss Joe Lalie, has warned the government that changing the education curriculum in a short period of time may be dangerous for the country.
Mr Lalie who took over the reign as IEA executive director recently, said the government must remember that educating a child is not like baking a cake or bread, where the outcome will be seen in an hour.
“Education outcome comes in 10-15 years and that’s the way to go. The government has got its equation all wrong,” he said.
The government must also re-think its policy of providing free school fees for all children in PNG, because according to Mr Lalie, the responsibility of paying for fees is that of parents. “The government’s responsibility is to build schools, resource schools, pay teachers well. The parents’ responsibility is the children’s school fees, and I think the government got it all wrong – the equation is very wrong,” he said.
“Parents must always play a vital role in educating and investing in their children and that is simply by paying school fees for their children.
“The Government taking school fees away from the parents is not right. Yes, they can subsidise but they also cannot ask for project fees because that is the Government’s responsibility,” Mr Lalie said.
“Parents pay school fees, government pays project fees and starts looking after teachers, resourcing them and in that way education will be a success for all.
“The government always has money for education in the country and should now seriously start thinking about resourcing schools, building classrooms etc,” Mr Lalie said.
