Madang
has had two recent incidents involving one of its "popular" families.
One involved a gun being fired at the Air Niugini terminal at the
airport. The other, at the town's only nightclub less than a fortnight
ago, saw a man slashed across the face losing an eye and being urinated
on as he lay screaming on the floor. The perpetrators were two sons of a
man who would be described in Australian journalese as a "colourful
local identity" and who has taken out an injunction to prevent the
police from properly investigating the first incident, an injunction
that was granted in Kimbe (?). No investigations into either incident
appear to be in process. We in Madang have had to put up with the sh*t
dished out by this "popular" family for years. The father seems to have
ensured that they remain apparently untouchable by a combination of
bribery and intimidation. The photo attached is from one of the son's
