Call to Expand PNG's Capital infrastructure

The Governor of the Papua New Guinea capital, Port Moresby, says it is vital for the city to develop its roading infrastructure as it continues to grow dramatically.

Powes Parkop says the city, which has about 700,000 residents, will soon hit the million mark.

He says there is growing congestion on Port Moresby’s roads and a national government allocation of 310 million US dollars for infrastructure development will mostly go on developing motorways to improve traffic flow.

Mr Parkop says every day people arrive at work late and children don’t get to school on time.

“So it is affecting business and services and you know life in the city so really we have no choice. We have limited choice but to spend that type of money, or I believe we could have more, that would be good in an ideal world but the Prime Minister has to balance the needs of the city with the entire rest of the country, so I really think we are getting a big bonus if we get all of that money next year.” RNZI
