The improvement and remodelling of Lae Port once completed will be one of the largest in the South Pacific excluding Australia and New Zealand.
And it will have a great impact on improving the economy of the country.
This was revealed during the visit of the National Planning and Monitoring Minister Charles Abel.
Mr Abel visited the Lae Port over the weekend to see the progress of the K30 million Lae Port remodeling projects currently underway to increase the port productivity.
Accompanied by the First Secretary to the National Planning and Monitoring, Dr Peter Kora, they were given a tour of the Lae Port facilities including the expansion project of tidal basin, then moved on to the container terminal and berth.
The PNG Ports Corporation Ltd’s Chief Executive Officer Stanley Alphonse and his Lae Port Senior Business manager Graham Proud were personally on site to take the Mr Abel and his delegate on tour.
Mr Alphonse briefed the Minister on the current Lae Port operations and the future plans of PNGPCL to improve its facilities to cater for the current demand and throughput, created by the exponential growth in cargo volumes.
Mr Abel and his delegates were given the opportunity to see the rubber tyred gantry (RTG) and mobile harbour cranes (MHC) at work. Both RTG and MHC are new business initiatives in place to improve the Lae port facilities.
The RTGs and MHC are currently being trialled in Lae and Port Moresby Ports and are expected to go in to full operation soon.
Mr Alphonse said : “There has been a growth in business at the Lae Port and with the introduction of RTGs and new stacking method for containers the turnaround times have drastically improved.”
Mr Abel was impressed and satisfied with the amount of work PNGPCL has undertaken to improve the existing Lae Port facilities and extension to the wharf.
Mr. Alphonse assured the Minister that the projects were on target and were expected to be completed by 2015.
