THE gruesome killing of three people in three different locations of Port Moresby city over the weekend has irked police in the National Capital District.
The police are very concerned about the deaths and attribute the killings to intoxication of alcohol by all the parties concerned.
An angry NCD Metropolitan Commander Peter Guinness yesterday told the Post Courier that the killings were beyond their control and they cannot prevent such activities because the perpetrators were all intoxicated when they committed the offences.
He is seriously considering holding a meeting with NCD Governor Powes Parkop and city authorities to try and come up with some form of regulation and control over the sale and consumption of liquor in the city.
On Sunday night, an ex-soldier from Oro Province was shot dead at point blank range, allegedly by a security guard at 3 mile.
POLICE were wrongly accused of being responsible for the killing, but initial investigations showed that a security unit from a particular firm had allegedly committed the offence. One man is now in police custody over the shooting.
The second death was that of a male from Enga Province at Hohola four surburb.
According to police, the man was killed and left in front of a property belonging to people from Hela Province. Relatives of the deceased found the body and accused the owners of the property of murdering their relative. This resulted in the burning down of the entire property.
The third death was at the University of PNG where a body was found without a head.
The deceased has not been identified and police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that may help police. Any person willing to assist the police can contact the Officer-in-Charge of the police Criminal Investigation Division.
NCD Metropolitan Commander Peter Guinness said while investigations are still in their preliminary stages, it has come to his attention that the deaths occurred as a result of consumption or abuse of alcohol.
“It’s everyone’s democratic right to drink alcohol but I am appealing to them to control their behavior. From the three deaths I am told that they are all connected one way
or another with the consumption of alcohol,” Mr Guinness said.
“Alcohol cannot be blamed for only these three killings. Drunks are largely responsible for road accidents where innocent people are killed, they harass the public and the list goes on,” he said.
