THE exam papers for grade 10 students who sat for their written expression exams about three months ago on June 11, have not been marked yet.
Now, these students are looking forward to sit for the national exams, which is scheduled for next Tuesday. October 2 -15 and are not happy to be informed that the exams are now being deferred by one week to October 9.
A Mt Hagen secondary school teacher, who does not want to be named, told the Post-Courier yesterday that the grade 10 written expression exams were still being kept in Port Moresby for marking.
He said a teacher from the same school who went to mark the papers in Port Moresby came back to the school and announced to the students and the teachers that the papers were not marked because the Department of Education failed to give cash allowance for the teachers appointed to mark the papers.
He said exam papers for grade 12 students who did their written expression exams in August after the grade 10s, were marked.
He said the reason being that there was no money to pay teachers who would be marking the grade 10 written expression papers. He asked how it was that grade 12 exams were marked and not grade 10s.
“Does that mean there are two budgets and the budget for the teachers who were to mark the grade 10 papers was not approved?” he asked.
The teacher said that students were now ready to do their exams next week without knowing their first results, but the delay of their exam by one week was demoralising for students and teachers as well.
He said teachers were now on holidays and no one would be marking the papers. Previously, they marked the papers straight after the students completed the exams.
“After the exams teachers took the papers to Moresby, putting them in order and ready for marking. But then, they found out that the Department of Education had no money to pay their allowance and accommodation. Thus, they returned to their respective schools; and the papers are still there waiting to be marked,” he said.
Telephone calls to the Department of Education to get comments were unsuccessful.
