THE new officers of the Nipa-Kutubu District Development Authority in Southern Highlands were sworn in at the Nipa station last Saturday.
Hundreds of people witnessed the occasion. The DDA has replaced the joint district budget priority committee.
Speaking at the ceremony, MP Jeffery Komal said: “This is a new chapter in the history of the district and it is like removing a curtain, which public servants hide behind and work to benefit themselves, depriving the rights of the people. Most public servants have the mentality that their pay is coming direct from Waigani and spend much of their time tending to private matters.”
Komal said DDA was the best solution to problems public servants created by not taking up their posts when posted to other locations, attending to private matters during official hours and more than one person collecting pay under one position.
“DDA is an effective mechanism to weed out corruption and all public servants will fall under one umbrella to give their best shot to the poor people who have been neglected for many years.
“It is one position, one person and one pay and all the power lies in the hands of the chief executive officer to hire and fire.”
Komal said the Government had good polices and it had responded to the cries of the poor people after numerous complaints of public servants neglecting them and getting paid for nothing.
DDA CEO John Harrisoal said under DDA, many public servants would be upset with him for getting tough as he would make sure everyone stick to principles and guidelines.
