MT Hagen police cell blocks currently hold 97 remandees.
That is 27 more than its holding capacity.
Provincial Police Commander Martin Lakari says Baisu gave notice last week that they will not be accepting any more remandees as their water issues are compounded by the dry season.
Water tanks at Baisu are running low and measures are being taken to ration the use of water.
He says the overcrowding means police are spending more money on food.
“This is also putting pressure on us on water usage and sanitation,” Lakari says.
Plans are also in place to release some remandees on bail.
Lakari says a report on this situation will be sent to police headquarters in Port Moresby next week.
No major incidents were reported.
