The Mt Hagen City
Authority yesterday called on the general public to beware of imposters
pretending to be workmen from its office.
City Manager Pious Pim
said his officers who worked as law enforcers in the city stopped four
months ago following the murder of a man and anybody claiming to be from
his office would be lying.
Mr Pim cleared the air
after two grade 10 girls were reportedly arrested for walking on a
flowerbed and taken to a waiting vehicle to be taken to the City
Authority office by imposters.
The girls were taken to a vacant location near the Holy Trinity Teachers College and packed rape by 15 men.
Mr Pim said: “None of my
men are working now. If individuals claim to be from our office and
arrest and charge anybody, they are imposters or conmen. The victims
should hold these people and report it to the police or call for help
from the general public.”
Post-Courier has
also received several similar cases in which girls and women being
tricked into jumping onto vehicles and taken to remote locations and
raped.
Mr Pim said charging the general public by any individual on the street was illegal and police should be reported.
He said some imposters
went to the extreme of producing ID cards which helped them in their
crime in charging some unsuspecting individuals amongst the general
public and the people, especially young women.
One of the imposters in
the rape of the two high school girls was arrested and locked up at the
Mt Hagen police cells two weeks ago but walked out of the cellblocks
under suspicious circumstances around midday the previous Sunday.
Mt Hagen police detectives were to interrogate the suspect on the rest of the gang last week when he walked out of the door.
The 15 men should have been charged for aggravated rape and would have face the death penalty had the court found them guilty.
Mt Hagen police are
looking for cell block cleaner Michael Kenemba from Tambul and suspect
Willie Simon from Magarima, a long time resident of Rabiamul.
Anybody with information on the two can contact Collin Poiya on 79198159.
