Investigations into the death of a man who was in police custody in Jiwaka Province are well underway.
Police commander Joseph Tondop says that his officers have managed to clear away the road block that was staged by the mourning relatives since Sunday last week until Thursday this week.
Tondop says that this was on the assurance that the police will look into the death of the Minj man who was picked up late on the night of Saturday February the 14th.
He says that investigators have been speaking with eye witnesses as well as the Highway patrol 4 unit that was involved in the incident.
Terms of references have already been established while investigators have moved into the area since Thursday to speak with witnesses.
PPC Tondop says that the unit which is based at Kudjip has been suspended since the death on Sunday and have been instructed to front up to investigators to establish their side of the incident.
Tondop thanked the grieving relatives of the deceased, Cedrick MacWidden, who allowed for the road block to be lifted as a show of good faith in the police.
He says that their understanding will help police to at least try to verify what took place after the man was arrested and taken away to the cells.
Meantime, Tondop also appealed to the other members of the community to allow on-duty police to maintain their posts and not take advantage of the grief and tensions surrounding the death.
He says that the community in Minj have been very receptive to the police despite the anger over the death which he says is commendable.
