Mendi Airport was shut down by the National
Airports Corporation on Tuesday after disputes over security.
Southern Highlands Provincial Administrator Ungia Kembo yesterday called for the corporation to reopen the airport and allow normal flights into the province.
Mr Kembo said the airport was closed after a dispute between two security firms.
He said the corporation awarded their security contract to a new security firm but the former company refused to pull out, triggering a stand-off.
“This is a problem that was created by the corporation and it should have solved it without disrupting services into the province,” Mr Kembo said.
“It’s a problem that is within the corporation’s capacity and it should address it and not throw mud at the people of Southern Highlands.”
According to the administrator, the airport has been closed for an indefinite period and would be re-opened once the dispute over the security contractors is resolved.
