Kar aims to deal with flood issue

By PEARSON KOLO

MOST parts of PNG are prone to natural disasters and the people and the government must be prepared to respond effectively to these disasters when they occur to minimise suffering.
Western Highlands Provincial Disaster co-ordinator Paias Kar said this when delivering a 10 tonne truck load of basic food supplies to the Wahgi flood victims over the Easter weekend.
Mr Kar said natural disasters occur anytime without warning and the people, with the assistance of the government, must be prepared at all times to counter these disasters to minimise destruction and deaths as much as possible.
“In our case, the Wahgi River floods towards the end of December and January every year which the people living along the banks of Waghi are familiar with,” Mr Kar said.
“The people must build their houses and food gardens away from the banks of the river to minimise destruction.”
Relief supplies flowed to the Waghi flood victims in the Western Highlands and Jiwaka provinces over the Easter weekend, bringing joy to the flood victims whose food gardens are slowly recovering.
Officers from the Western Highlands Disaster Office delivered a truck load of of food items like rice, tinned fish, salt, cooking oil, sugar, tea and other basic food items and delivered them to the people of Kondepina, Kimil, Kindeng and Water Lilly Village in the Waghi Bruk area.
Mr Kar while delivering the food supplies apologised to the people on behalf of the National Disaster Officer for providing the relief supplies two months after the disaster.
He explained to the victims that the very important thing for the Provincial Disaster office to do now is to look for ways to redirect or control the direction of Waghi so that it cannot harm people in the future.
“Relief supplies have been coming into the flood affected areas year after year while nothing has been done to address the cause of the floods,” Mr Kar stressed.
“Now under my leadership as the provincial disaster coordinator, preparations are under way to redirect and control the river.”
Mr Kar said the relief supplies were provided through the National Disaster of
fice.
