Village courts to get allowances

By MICHAEL KOMA

VILLAGE court officers of Chimbu’s populous Sinasina-Yongomugl district will receive K200 allowance per fortnight, which equates to K5200 an officer every year.
On top of that, all the districts 178 village court magistrates, clerks, peace officers and land mediators received their backdated allowances of K1200 each on Tuesday.
This amount of fortnightly allowances for village court officials for Sinasina-Yongomugl is probably the first for any of the 89 districts in the country.
Village court officials in most provinces receive only K20 per month or K240 a year, even though they carry the burden of ensuring law and order and peace and harmony in thousands of rural communities throughout the country.
The 178 village court officers flocked to Kamtai district office on Tuesday and each received their backdated allowances, which was preceded by traditional dancing and speeches.
The Joint District Planning and Budget Priority Committee, headed by the local MP and Minister for Justice and Attorney General Kerenga Kua has approved K2.5 million in the 2013 district budget for this purpose.

District Administrator Bal Numapo and provincial police commander Augustine Wampe acknowledged the local lawmen for tirelessly serving the people while receiving only K37 each on a monthly basis since independence.
On top of this, all the 53 ward councillors in the district’s three local level governments of Tabare, Yongomugl and Suwai were also put on a K200 fortnightly allowance.
