Treasury Minister Don Polye has announced moves to introduce a new tax regime.
In this move, Minister Polye has tasked the governments’ money making agencies to increase their areas of revenue.
Treasury Minister Don Polye asked institutions like Internal Revenue Commission and PNG Customs to increase their revenue making.
He made this announcement last week when officiating at the launch of PNG Customs five year service plan.
The treasure said when parliament resumes next week he will announce the new tax regime.
Polye said this is the government’s move to recoup all monies lost in tax including all outstanding tax owed to the government.
The government is yet to collect K2.1 billion in tax going back many years.
PNG Customs Commissioner Ray Paul said his organisation cannot do more at the moment because of its current capacity.
“Currently we are on about 50-60 per cent strength on deck to do our job. I know we can and I’m confident with that,” says Paul
In its effort to recoup the outstanding tax, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has asked for a technical team to focus on collecting this money.
