Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is pleased with the performance of the
People's National Congress party at the poll and has expressed
confidence that PNC will form the next government.
"If you look at the results so far, in electorates where votes are
being counted many PNC party candidates are either leading, running
second or third,” Mr O’Neill said.
He said in the past 10 months, PNC has led the government and provided stability, laying the foundation for economic growth and rebuilding our infrastructure, by introducing free education, free health care and unveiling an infrastructure development program.
He added that people obviously want these policies and programs to continue and are turning up in droves to support PNC candidates.
Mr O'Neill retained his Ialibu-Pangia seat on Saturday, trouncing his seven rivals by a record margin.
Before the elections, people in the electorate had actually asked the rival candidates to step down so O'Neill could be elected unopposed. However, the seven refused and suffered a severe beating in the poll as evidenced by the result.
The Prime Minister personally thanked the people of Ialibu-Pangia for their overwhelming support and exemplary conduct during the elections.
He also commend election officials and security forces for a job well done.
Upon Mr O’Neill’s arrival in Port Moresby on Saturday, Pastor Charles Lapa led staff and supporters at the Government Flying Unit to meet and congratulate the Prime Minister and pray for him.
In the coming days, Mr O'Neill will follow the election results closely and put in-place a strategy to form the next government.
