Story By PNG LooP
Police in the Highlands region have
seen a high number of drivers who are drinking and driving along the highway.
Over the Easter weekend the highway
patrol units have fined and charged over 120 drunken drivers along the main
link of the highway between Lae and Mount Hagen.
The Highlands regional commander
Teddy Tei tells PNG Loop that many of these charged drivers were drinking and
driving PMV trucks as well as family vehicles.
Commander Tei says that from Friday
till Sunday afternoon, there had been 139 passengers charged with drinking in a
moving vehicle.
He says that many of these cases
show that people need to change their mentality about drinking and driving.
Tei says that as part of the
region’s operational briefings that the main area of operations was focused
along the highway.
Provinces such as the Western and
Eastern Highlands and Enga carried out random road checks starting early
last week through to Sunday.
The road blocks were also to check
on the movement of illegal drugs, weapons and un-roadworthy vehicles.
