Govt, businesses move into Mendi

By JOHNNY POIYA

The Southern Highlands Provincial capital Mendi has experienced an increase in business as private and government agencies set-up office under the government’s private public partnership initiative.
ANZ Bank opened a new branch two weeks ago under its Go Rural program that has seen offices opened up in rural parts of the country.
Southern Highlands Provincial Administrator Ungia Kembo yesterday said many Southern Highlanders were not yet aware that ANZ, the Public Solicitor’s office and Motor Vehicle Insurance Ltd have also opened shops in town.
The Public Solicitor’s office has been in operation for two months while the vehicle insurance company has been in operation for the last couple of years.
“The government’s private-public partnership initiative is seeing a lot of prominent business houses moving into Southern Highlands province,” Mr Kembo said.
“These are very vital services that are being brought in to serve our people.”
He said Governor Powi and his administration were very happy and openly welcomed any major corporate agencies that wanted to come into the province.
Of the ANZ set-up, Mr Kembo said it gave the people a choice to
choose from now as the province only had a BSP branch for several years.
“All those entities have come along with job opportunities, services and choices that ease financial burdens and the risks involved in travelling out of province to get to services,” he said.
He said the province has changed a lot, and he appealed to other government and private agencies to come in and establish offices.
