BUSINESS at the country’s largest fresh vegetable garden, Mt Hagen market, is flourishing after a couple of weeks’ violence during the LLG election period.
Farmers from throughout Western Highlands and the other Highlands provinces are pouring in every day with their produce while project areas in the country and the public are buying at very affordable prices.
The return to normalcy and the increase in business activities in the market came about after Mt Hagen police was engaged by the management of the market to provide security after the chaotic week during the recent LLG elections.
Mt Hagen market public relations officer Kwip Koropa yesterday said the presence of police providing security at the market has seen significant change in the operation and daily business at the market.
Mr Koropa said the Mt Hagen city management made a loss in gate takings during the LLG election related violence because they did not provide adequate security, resulting in damage done to many of the market facilities.
“The Hagen market was targeted by political rivals, and this disturbed the market management to properly run the market as many of the market employees feared for their lives and ran away,” Mr Koropa said.
“But the intervention of the police, who are now providing security, has greatly changed business at the Mt Hagen Market for the better.”
Mr Koropa said even petty crimes such as pickpocketing, snatching of mobile phones, bilums and other personal items by opportunists have decreased drastically.
“The market management is also collecting fees under police supervision while farmers, vendors and buyers are busy conducting their business without fear,” Mr Koropa said.
“I really appreciate Mt Hagen police, and especially Sergeant Traota Kolo and his policemen for putting the market to the current state it is in. It’s the result of their effective operation over the last six weeks.”
Mr Koropa also appealed to all the Open MPs and the Governor of Western Highlands to provide some funding for the maintenance of the market’s facilities.
He said some important facilities like toilets, the power system and fence needed maintenance and the MPs of the province must do that because people from all over Western Highlands are benefiting from the market.
