KOMO Margarima MP Francis Potape On Monday
commended his people for staging a peaceful and trouble-free LLG election in his
electorate.
Mr Potape said this after the counting in the last two LLGs, Upper Wage and Lower Wage over the weekend in Margarima.
Mr Potape earlier allocated over K200,000 from his district funds to the PNG Electoral Commission and security forces to assist in the smooth conduct of the elections.
The funds were used for the hire of vehicles for election officials and police, among other logistical support.
Mr Potape said he had to step in and assist the commission and the police to ensure a trouble-free and peaceful election and he was proud he had achieved that despite minor hiccups.
The remote Mt Bosavi LLG was the first to be declared last month with Mr Efala Babe as the winner after unseating former president Francis Kera. This was followed by the declaration of Hela Deputy Governor Thomas Potape who won his Komo LLG seat last Wednesday in Tari.
Last Thursday Hulia LLG president Eric Yawas also won back his seat, while on Saturday in the Margarima counting centre, veteran Guluwa Wakinda retained his Lower Wage LLG president seat.
On Sunday at about 2:30pm, Jalo Hape was declared president-elect for the Upper Wage LLG by returning officer Taki Kurubu.
Mr Habe polled 5387 votes to unseat the incumbent, Hape Merelia, while Dennis Libe, the brother of former Komo Margarima MP, late Balus Libe, polled more than 3900 votes to finish second.
Mr Potape was present in Tari to welcome Mr Habe and all the other LLG president-elects for his electorate who would now make up the joint district budget planning and priority committee for his district.
Mr Potape said the declaration for Upper Wage concluded the elections for the five LLGs in his electorate.
Mr Potape thanked ousted presidents Hape Merelia (Upper Wage) and Francis Kera (Mt Bosavi) for working with them in the last five years and wished them well in their future endeavours.
He also thanked and commended young Lower Wage leader and Enep ward councillor Hipson Haya for being caretaker president for Lower Wage for one year when the president’s post was being contested in court.
Only the Komo-Margarima electorate had successful LLG elections in the new Hela Province.
Tari Pori had elections declared failed in Tari Urban, Tagali and Hayapuga LLGs.
Koroba-Kopiago district had North and South Koroba LLGs elections declared as failed by the Electoral Commission.
