School needs extra classrooms

Story By Post- Courier

WHERE there is no Government there are churches to provide for the needy.
In addition to spiritual development, churches have provided the core health and education services for the rural bulk and this has been the trend in our short history to date.
While credit goes to the main streamers in the likes of the Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Seventh Day Adventist and the United Church, new comers are advancing well on the slate as well.

One such advancement was by the Baptist Church in Wabag town, Enga Province. In 1997, the church decided to set up an elementary school at the corner of the Beat Street, Wabag town, with the intention to help in the process of basic education service delivery.
From a humble beginning, the school today boasts of a level four status as more children enrol following the Enga Provincial Government’s free education policy which is now being complimented by the free education policy of the O’Neill- Dion Government as well.
Known as the Beat Street Baptist Elementary School (Wabag), the school boasts of two prep classes, two grade one classes, and one grade two class although they would really wish for two grade twos.

It is an all women’s affair around there. The teacher-in- charge (TIC) Joice Jerry is a female who is being backed up by a staff strength of eight other female teachers.
The needs of the school would not be known without my visit at the invitation of Beat Street Ward councillor and Chairman of the School Salas Kamberan - a visit which the TIC had described as a blessing to them.
Mr Kamberan said their priority now was to complete work on the other grade two classroom so it balanced out. Currently, they have only one grade two classroom while other grades have two classrooms each.
The school will need around K50,000 to complete this work as well as build a second classroom on top of the current grade one classroom.
Such is their appeal to the kind-hearted individuals, Government and corporate citizens.
