Kickboxer stepping up

By KEVIN TEME
PNG is likely to have another world champion kickboxer come March next year.
Heavyweight kickboxer, Timmy Unda is passionate about his code and spends a lot of time and commitment to his training.
He started fighting at the tender age of 11, representing Madang in various national events before he came to Port Moresby.
In the big city, Unda started playing rugby league which saw him eventually make it to the Port Moresby Stop n Shop Vipers team. While rugby league is an optional sport, his passion has been kickboxing.
Former world light weight champion Stanley Nandex has recognized Unda's potential and passion for the game, thus making it possible for him to attend the international world title challenge in the heavy weight division.

Timmy has a lot of potential and a long way to go. He is only 21 and will be under my training, said Nandex.
Of course, for our athletes to travel overseas, we need the resources and finance to fund this. Fortunately for Unda, one company has come on board to help him realise his dream. NC Civil Works, a nationally-owned company, has offered to support Unda's preparation for the world title championship.
The sponsorship will consist of an education scholarship, part time employment and all costs incurred during his training will be paid for by the company. Nandex said the sponsorship is the first of its kind for kickboxing and was thankful to NC Civil Works.

Unlike me, I had no professional trainer and no support from business houses.
Timmy is lucky and having the talent with a good combination of resources will go a long way and I am confident he will make PNG proud, he added.
Young Unda was thankful to NC Civil Works for the sponsorship.
This is an opportunity for me and I thank NC Civil Works for supporting me in my preparation for the world challenge, Unda said.
This is the first time PNG will be sending a fighter to the world championship in the heavy weight division.
