Olkoben presents live pigs to Powi as part of the traditional reconciliation.
Post Courier .
THE biggest ever peace
and reconciliation ceremony was held over the weekend in the Nipa Kutubu
district after two brothers fought over the position of provincial
administration about four years ago.
The peace and
reconciliation ceremony between former Southern Highlands provincial
treasurer Lawrence Olkoben and Former provincial Administrator and now
Governor William Powi took place at Harua village in Nipa on Saturday
also fostered the political support of the Governor seat.
The ceremony was
witnessed by more than 10, 000 people including Nipa Kutubu MP Jeffery
Komal, Managing Director of NCPC who is also from the area and other
educated elites from the district and other parts of the Southern
Highlands.
Mr Olkoben said the
several supporters from both sides received injuries including gun
wounds after supporters clashed over who should be the provincial
administrator after both men from the Nipa district were appointed
administrators respectively in 2011.
Powi was appointed
Administrator by the National Executive Council by the O’Neill led
Government when Olkoben was appointed Administrator by then Governor
Anderson Agiru.
Both men claimed to be the provincial administrator and the matter was taken to court by the supporters clashed.
During the
reconciliation ceremony, both men admitted fighting over what they
described the separate appointments as “a bone’ thrown between the two
brothers to create disharmony and standoff in the community.
Both men said it is no
good in keeping the difference for a long time and the reconciliation
ceremony now reliefs the grudges they had for each other and foster a
stronger relationship.
