Farmers are concerned at the lack of commitment by the government to the agriculture
sector, livestock and rural entrepreneurship. The Farmers and Settlers Association acting
president Thomas Solepa says they are concerned at the lack of markets and
farmers outlets in Goroka, Kainantu and Lae City. Solepa says many farmers have issues of
animals and plant pest and diseases but very little help is available to them.
“Then we have the Livestock Development
Corporation closing down with abattoirs closed and some assets transferred to
the Coffee Industry Corporation including beekeeping and honey production and
processing. While CIC is struggling with coffee production and decline in
production, the Zuguru Ranch EHP and
Stewart Station Madang is given to CIC.” Solepa says farmers are not against
innovations but see very little outcome after a huge amount of money is spent.
The y say
that as a farmers organisation they were not against such agricultural
innovations but the amount of money spent on wastage with little outcomes.
The Farmers and Settlers Association
believes that commodity boards should focus on a rehabilitation program to
increase tree crops and fresh food production; rehabilitate and restock various
Livestock Stations and carry out breeding and distribution; focus on
re-establishing bee keeping and honey production; increase training for farmers
in production and post-harvest handling.
