THE SOUTHERN Highlands Pro-vincial Government has allocated K2 million to help meet tuition fee costs for Southern Highlands students attending universities throughout the country. Governor William Powi announced this at a media conference last Friday in Port Moresby. Mr Powi said the provincial government is paying 50 per cent of the tuition for each student from the province who are attending the University of Papua New Guinea, University of Technology, Pacific Adventist University, Goroka University, Divine Word University and the University of Natural Resources and Environment (Vudal and Popondetta campuses) this year.
“I want to announce to the people of Southern Highlands that the provincial government will meet 50 per cent of the cost of tuition fees to ease the burden on parents and to ensure the education of future leaders of the province and the country is guaranteed,” Mr Powi said. He said the initiative to subsidise tertiary education fees for students from the province is being put to trial this year and will roll out for students attending other tertiary training institutions like the teachers colleges and technical colleges, depending on the success of what is being undertaken this year.
In addition, he said that this is one of the priorities for the province to ensure there are better qualified and skilled professionals who can help develop the province as well as the country as a whole. Governor Powi said the provincial government is in the process of making payment and currently liaising with the respective universities to consolidate the confirmed number of accepted and continuing SHP students for the 2014 academic year in each of these institutions.
