Attorney General and Minister for Justice Kerenga Kua has ordered
investigations into the granting of a naturalised citizenship to
controversial Indonesian businessman and now fugitive Joko Soegiarto
Tjandra.
Mr. Kua assured a top-level Indonesian Government
delegation during a meeting in Port Moresby (Wed 12.12) that
the citizenship issue would be investigat
ion to determine whether administrative and legal requirements were
followed when Tsandra was granted with a PNG citizen status.
Indonesia's Vice Attorney General Doctor Darmono led the delegation
which included Indonesian Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Andreas
Sitepu.
Minister Kua also assured the delegation that the PNG
Government would cooperate with the relevant Indonesian Government
authorities to deal with the issue.
Wednesday meeting is a
follow-up of a request by the Indonesian Government in June last year,
to have Tsandra arrested, detained and extradited to Indonesia to face
the law for alleged official corruption between 1997 and 1998.
Doctor Darmono and his delegation discussed issues relating to
allegations of corruption and a pending Supreme Court decision against
Tsandra.
The Indonesian Government believes Tsandra had given
false and misleading information to Customs and Immigration authorities
in PNG to be granted citizenship.
Doctor Darmono and his
delegation also re-submitted their government's request to the PNG
Government for Tsandra to be extradited back to Indonesia.
