MOTHER KILLED BY LIGHTNING

By: Joe Kereme

A young mother was killed and her two children seriously injured by lighting in the Southern Highland Province.

The mother and her two children from Pulim Village near Nipa Government station, were in their garden when the lightning struck them.

The two children have been admitted to Nipa rural hospital with serious burns and injuries to their bodies.

In another incident in Mendi town also yesterday, a pregnant woman died on the way to the Mendi General Hospital due to injuries to her body.

Eyewitnesses say, the woman, who was about seven months pregnant, was kicked in the abdomen by her teacher husband, following a domestic argument.
Meanwhile all Air Niugini flights into Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, have been suspended indefinitely.

The airline's Chief Executive Officer, Wasantha Kumarasiri, announced the suspension yesterday, due to safety issues.

This comes after the pilots stopped their aircraft for almost two hours to collect broken bottles, old shoes and sticks on the runway.

People have been breaking bottles on the runway, and cross the airstrip at random while the spike fences have been removed.

Meantime, the traveling public in Port Moresby has been advised to the Jackson's Airport well ahead of check in time, at least an hour prior to usual check in time.

This is because of the maintenance work being carried out along various sections of the city roads. NBC
