I AM a resident of Port Moresby and it is my view that something needs to be drastically done about the sale of betelnut in the National Capital District due to it’s adverse effect by the careless attitude of people who consume this nut.
While I don’t want to lecture people, it has come to a stage where the sale of this nut in non designated areas is now a major contributing factor in terms of littering and betelnut stains which is a health hazard.
Betelnut is widely grown in nearly all parts of the coastal regions of Papua New Guinea and has its significance however, people have forgotten about that as it has now become an income generating commodity that is very hard to avoid in these hard times.
The issue here is that while some of us try our best to comply with the cleaniness of the city, there are others who are plain ignorant in maintening the cleaniness of our city.
I am appealing to all government departments, agencies, business houses both in the govermnent and private sectors to ensure that they do their part by banning the sale of betelnuts within the vicinity of their offices and locations.
This will deter the sale of this nut and this goes out to these companies; Stop N Shop Downtown, Stop N Shop Boroko, Tabari Place business houses, Town Police station bus stops, the Internal Revenue Commission headquarters, Era Ruman building and surrounding shops, Waterfront Garamut shopping center, SVS Konedobu, Vision City Waigani, Boroko Foodworld, Jacksons International airport carparks and waiting areas both domestic and international, Vulupindi House, National Capital District Commission offices, Fincorp House at Waigani and Central Government offices and surrounding areas.
It is now time that people in authority in these places MUST now flex their muscles in ensuring that our city is clean in the eyes of citizens and visitors, and tourists etc.
Finally, the NCD Governor Powes Parkop and the NCDC must come up with an effective method of ensuring that selling of betelnut and other items in places other then designated areas is prohibited and must be enforced by way of continous monitoring.
And if people and business houses and companies don’t comply, then they should be penalised with very hefty fines.
Disgusted citizen
