Research vital in SME growth

By MAL TAIME

WHILE the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) give grassroots people an opportunity to involve in business activities, the national Government must carry out research first to identify the finacial capacity of any group that wants to do business.
Jiwaka Building Supplies Ltd and Metal Industry managing director Sam Yuants said this last week when commending Trade Commerce and Industry Minister Richard Maru for the initiative.
Mr Yuants said SMEs would benefit top class businessmen and women while small people who are going into poultry, piggery and coffee projects would miss out or continue to remain at the same level.
Mr Yuants said if the Government was serious about supporting business activities in Papua New Guinea, reseacrh must be done first to create databases, and based on this databases, the program can be rolled out.
“Papua New Guinea is full of selfishness, jealousy and corruption and it is important that they have to be done away with by being cooperative, transparent and accountable,” he said.
“For instance Asians are dominating all the building, while only few Papua New Guineans run and operate few business houses but most citizens of this country do not want to go to the buildings that are owned by the nationals because they are jealous.
“One way or the other if they give money to the national business people their money will circulate in the country and help support them but if the money is spent to Asians the money makes no difference.”
He said if someone wanted to start a small business in coffee cherry buying or frying flour the other person follows the same track and this was jealousy.
