Major crimes reported in Lae MONDAY included a 22-year-old man being shot by police.
He died later from loss of blood. Other serious crimes were that of a man having one of his arms chopped off; a fight re-ignited at Bumbu settlement; and Bumayong Secondary School closing early after a fight between students and outsiders.

These were reported by Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent Nema Mondiai to the Post-Courier.
Mr Mondiai said a East Sepik, identified as Cedric Yafai, 22, was alleged to have raped a woman and a formal complaint was laid with the police by the alleged victim.
Police went to arrest late Yafai, the alleged perpetrator, and in the process he was shot in his knees.

He said the suspect died some hours later at Angau Memorial Hospital due loss of blood.
“I am waiting for the relatives to come forward and make an official complaint so that we can investigate the shooting to find out whether it was justified or not,” he said.
A relative of the deceased fronted up at the Post-Courier and said the victim was an innocent man that was shot dead by police.
“He was shot dead in front of his wife and children and other relatives,” he said.
Mr Mondiai has asked the relatives to come forward with information on the shooting.
In another incident at Limki Settlement, near Taraka area, a man from Jiwaka Province alleged to be a producer of illegal alcohol ‘steam’ or home brew had one of his arms chopped off, allegedly by angry Kamkumung landowners.
Mr Mondiai said Kamkumung landowners had been telling the man to stop his illegal activities but he did not take heed of their warnings.
He said the man was confronted by the landowners and a fight ensued, resulting in one of his arms being chopped off.
At Bumbu, he said peace and reconciliation process between the Sepiks and Morobe Post people was at an advanced stage but few East Sepik youths alleged to be drunk, re-ignited the fight over the weekend.
He said the men, who were intoxicated by liquor at the time, went to Morobe compound and fought with the people there and set fire to five houses.
He said police were on the ground monitoring the situation.
At Bumayong, a policeman stationed in front of the school gate, monitoring the situation, said things had quietened down but there was a fight that started over the weekend and continued yesterday morning, disrupting classes at the school.
The policeman said the school was shutting down for the year due to the fight and students were being sent home and they were standing guard at the school to allow the students to leave without being intimidated or harassed. Bumayong has had a tough year due to continuous student fights.
