Mining Minister, Byron Chan says the Solwara 1 deep sea mining project has been misrepresented.
In
a six page explanation, Mr. Chan said approval for the mining lease for
Nautilus had infact been granted 19 months ago by the previous Somare
Government.
Even then, Mr. Chan pointed out that plans for the mine and impact studies are contrary to recent public out bursts.
He said all considerations have been fully reviewed and they also meet legal requirements.
On public awareness, Mr. Chan pointed out that a series of consultations were held at dozens of locations since 2007.
The
Mining Minister added that the media has apparently given the
impression that the new O’Neil/ Dion Government has rushed to approve
the project.
He said this is not true and urged critics to study the facts.
