EIGHTEEN students from St Joseph Technical College in Lae are now behind bars after they attacked Lae Secondary School students .
The students armed with knives, wire slingshots, sticks, stones and homemade pistol attacked the school during the first two periods of the day sunday.
Lae Secondary School principal Chris Raymond confirmed yesterday of the attack that shocked the entire school both staff and the students.
Mr Raymond said the attacked resulted because of a St Joseph student who was alleged to be assaulted by one of the Lae Secondary student during the weekend.
He said a formal complaint was raised by a teacher at St Joseph to the administration that one of the Lae Secondary students had assault a Student from St Joseph.
It was alleged that the student was wearing a Lae Secondary School cap when he assault the St Joseph student.
However Mr Raymond brushed a-side the allegation and said that the Lae Secondary hats were worn by many and that it couldn’t be one of their student.
“We had a phone call from one of the teachers at St Joseph, this morning, making a formal complaint on the incident at the weekend.
The incident happened during the weekend and we cannot confirm whether it was one of our students.
“School caps are worn by everyone in Lae. We can’t maintain that the person was one of our students,” Mr Raymond said.
The attack began on the main school gate where they tried to force their way through the security guards.
The intruders started throwing missiles of stones at the guards as well three shots were fired.
He said the Lae Secondary boys retaliated and chased the attackers to Eriku shopping centres and Hawk Street.
“I actually heard three shots but it was faint, maybe from a homemade pistol,” Mr Raymond said.
He also said that there were evidence that these attackers were totally armed with weapons when they conducted the attack.
Mr Raymond also commended his students for not taking the matter further after they were re-called by teachers to the school.
He said the school would be closed tomorrow because the students were already affected physiologically.
Meanwhile police are carrying out investigation before charges will be laid against the 18 students.
